Hendrick Medical Center saw the need to bring healthcare to southern Abilene in order to better serve their growing community. The result of this vision is a 44-exam-room, 35,000-square-foot freestanding clinic. The clinic was designed to be a comprehensive healthcare destination including family practice, pediatrics, and ENT specialties. The facility also provides imaging services including X-Ray, CT scan, and ultrasound.

Designing around the idea of creating a favorable patient experience, several key design strategies were incorporated. The building was divided into three pods, each served from a central entrance/waiting area. Additionally, each pod has its own waiting and sub-waiting areas. Intuitive wayfinding and ease of navigation were important factors to decrease patient apprehension and create a positive overall experience. The pod layout also helps with patient flow and wait times as it puts the physicians and staff adjacent to their exam rooms, increasing their efficiency. Daylighting was also important as it lowers patient’s anxiety and adds a favorable experience.
